WHAT

What indeed are we going to do about all this plastic? Last year a worked on a solution to reduce waste from the meals you buy in the supermarket. You know the ones - on the go style breakkies/salads/curries that come in a plastic bowl with peel off plastic lid often covered in stickers, all packaged up for our sweet convenience.

PROCESS

It was tricky to find a solution viable for the mass scale those meals go out on, but equally exciting at the impact it could have. I was lucky enough to work with a supermarket food packaging expert who’s been in the biz since the 80’s - Paul Devonshie from DeMo. I looked at all kinds of banana leaf packaging and origami style silicone bowls. He knocked back many many iterations until …

SOLUTION

We came to a reusable wheat straw plastic bowl + home-compostable plastic lid with cardboard sleeve. It wasn’t totally reusable (as was the aim), but if not reusable the materials were home-compostable - a big step forward none the less.
